Paulo Sousa: Robert Lewandowski special like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Poland coach Paulo Sousa has compared Robert Lewandowski to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as he called on the striker to make the difference against England.

Lewandowski has scored a record 72 goals for Poland and also hit a record 41 goals for Bayern Munich last season.

The 33-year-old missed Poland’s 2-1 loss at Wembley in March but will captain the side when the Three Lions travel to Warsaw for their World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.

Poland sit five points behind England in second place in Group I with Sousa hopeful Lewandowski can help lead his men to victory over the leaders.

“We have a good number of players,” the Portuguese said at his pre-match press conference.

“Of course, Robert is a key player, he is very special like Messi for Argentina or Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal.

“Also for their clubs they are special, they are important. Robert isn’t only important here, we saw it also last season with his club.

“They are special. We need to understand that. But they don’t do things alone, they understand they need to relate with their team-mates and push positively their team-mates.

“But with the energy of a player like Robert, he can make a big difference, in England we were very competitive without him. This is something we want to be.

“The team is growing and giving the chances to Robert to be very special and make the difference and hopefully tomorrow we can do it.”

The loss at Wembley was Sousa’s first as Poland boss, having taken over just two months earlier.

A former manager at QPR, Swansea and Leicester, the 51-year-old knows just what to expect from the Euro 2020 finalists.

“England have key players that can play short and long and we need to be prepared for this intensity,” he added.

“Their players, they are used to playing in the best league, with a high tempo and high intensity and at international level they can maintain a good level of performance tactically and with that intensity.

“It is up to us to keep maintaining our mentality like we have been showing in most of our game, we are more and more closer to what I want to see in the team. It is evident, the players understand what needs to be done.”
