Rennes boss Bruno Genesio rates Leicester favourites for Conference League tie
Rennes boss Bruno Genesio has no doubt Leicester are the favourites in the sides’ Europa Conference League tie but says he and his team have seen “things to exploit”.
The French outfit travel to the King Power Stadium on Thursday for leg one of the last-16 tie.
Genesio said at his pre-match press conference, according to Rennes’ official website: “It’s an interesting competition for us and a good way to assess ourselves against a big European club.
“They are favourites and better equipped than us but we have to go there with a lot of confidence and conviction.
“They are a team with a lot of experience, who played in the Champions League and were champions of England not so long ago. It is one of the best teams in this Conference League.
“We watched them and we saw that they were a very good team with talented players capable of making a difference. We also saw that there were things to exploit.
“We go there with ambition, humility but above all with our strengths.”
Rennes, currently fourth in Ligue 1 and the second-highest scorers in the division this term, are in the last 16 of the Conference League after finishing top of their group.
Their group matches included drawing 2-2 at home with Tottenham, before being handed a 3-0 win by UEFA for the reverse fixture after it was called off following a Covid outbreak in the Spurs camp.
They face a Leicester side who, having come third in their Europa League group, advanced to this tie by beating Danish side Randers 7-2 on aggregate in a play-off.
The two legs against Randers were among a run of four victories in five outings for Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes, who won 1-0 against Leeds on Saturday.
Genesio added of Leicester, who are 12th in the Premier League: “They have talented players who, when the team is down, are able to turn things around. This was the case against Leeds where they were dominated most of the time.
“They were able to make the difference on two or three class actions. You will have to be vigilant during the 90 minutes.”
