It is quite an achievement by Saints as they won just one of their first 16 top-flight matches of the campaign and only improved once Ralph Hasenhuttl succeeded Mark Hughes in December. Southampton started the match brightly and Nathan Redmond had a third-minute shot blocked by Chris Mepham before the home team deservedly took the lead nine minutes later, Shane Longs effort deflecting off Nathan Ake and beating Artur Boruc in the Cherries goal. However, Bournemouth equalised with their first effort on goal in the 20th minute, a counter-attack being finished off by Dan Gosling after Callum Wilson had set him up. Saints should have restored their lead three minutes later when Long contrived to hit the post when he had been presented with an open goal after his first effort had been parried by Boruc. Just past the half-hour mark Eddie Howes team took the lead, Angus Gunn failing to deal with David Brooks shot and Wilson turning the ball home. Southampton were unfortunate to be behind at the break and they pressed forward at the start of the second half in search of an equaliser with Redmond curling a shot narrowly wide after being set up by Danny Ings. Bournemouth continued to look dangerous on the break though and Jack Simpson headed into the side-netting from a corner before Southampton equalised in the 57th minute, James Ward-Prowse running forward before unleashing a low shot that was too good for Boruc. Southampton moved in front in the 67th minute with a powerful header by substitute Matt Targett from Yan Valerys cross but Bournemouth refused to concede defeat and equalised with four minutes left when Wilson bundled Ryan Frasers cross past Gunn. Wilson almost scored a winner for the Cherries but Southampton hung on to claim the precious point that keeps them in the top-flight.
