Newcastle United v Manchester United
Newcastle United v Manchester United
Newcastle United bid to move out of the relegation zone on Sunday when they welcome Manchester United to St James' Park.

The Magpies suffered an embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Leicester City last time out, a result that heaped the pressure on Steve Bruce, and the north-east outfit have won just once in eight matches in all competitions this season.

Newcastle have won just one of their last six Premier League home games while they have claimed just six victories in 48 top-flight matches against 20-time English champions Manchester United. Bruce, who will take charge of his 400th game as a PL manager, will be without the suspended Isaac Hayden after the midfielder was shown a straight red card in that loss to the Foxes. English striker Dwight Gayle could make his first appearance for the club in 17 months, after he recovered from a calf injury, while summer arrival Allan Saint-Maximin is also pushing for a start.

United have amassed just nine points after seven league games, their worst tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1989, and they head into the game on the back of a dismal 0-0 Europa League draw at AZ Alkmaar.

The Red Devils are winless in their last seven away games in the league but they have won 13 Premier League games at Newcastle - with only their records away to Aston Villa and Everton superior. France internationals Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are both sidelined with respective ankle and thigh problems while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a fitness doubt, meaning Diogo Dalot is likely to start at St James' Park.

Team News

Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden is suspended for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United. Hayden was dismissed for a challenge on Leicester’s Dennis Praet during last weekend’s 5-0 drubbing at the King Power Stadium and begins a three-match ban. However, head coach Steve Bruce could be boosted by the return of striker Dwight Gayle (calf), wing-back Jetro Willems (knee) and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey (hamstring), while defender Florian Lejeune (knee) is building up match fitness, leaving only winger Matt Ritchie (ankle) on the casualty list. Paul Pogba, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial look set to be among Manchester United’s absentees.

Pogba (foot), Wan-Bissaka (illness) and Martial (thigh) were among those that missed Thursday’s Europa League trip to AZ Alkmaar, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saying afterwards that there would “probably not” be any players returning on Sunday. Defenders Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Ashley Young were others to miss the 0-0 draw in Holland, where forward Jesse Lingard limped off with a hamstring issue that will need assessing.

Newcastle provisional squad: Dubravka, Darlow, Manquillo, Krafth, Yedlin, Dummett, Willems, Lascelles, Fernandez, Schar, Clark, S. Longstaff, Shelvey, Ki, M. Longstaff, Atsu, Almiron, Joelinton, Muto, Carroll, Gayle.
