Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will make late checks on Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schar and Joelinton ahead of the New Year’s Day clash with Leicester.

Full-back Manquillo sat out Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat by Everton with a groin strain, while central defender Schar and striker Joelinton emerged from the game with hamstring and calf problems respectively, threatening to further deplete an already injury-ravaged squad.

Midfielder Matt Ritchie could return from ankle surgery at Rochdale in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, but defenders Jamaal Lascelles (fractured tibia), Ciaran Clark (calf) and Paul Dummett (groin) and striker Allan Saint-Maximin (hamstring) are all out, while Ki Sung-yueng has been missing in recent weeks because of illness.

Jamie Vardy should return for Leicester after missing the 2-1 win at West Ham for the birth of his daughter.

Ricardo Pereira is also expected to make a comeback having sat out the victory with a minor hamstring issue.

Matty James is training after a long-term Achilles injury but is short of match fitness and is likely to be loaned out next month.
