Ruben Vinagre scored the decisive spot kick as the Premier League side edged through at the expense of their Championship opponents. Lucas Boye had earlier scored a dramatic 99th-minute equaliser for Reading to send the game to penalties but went on to miss in the shootout along with teammate John Swift. It was a dramatic end to a largely dour tie, with neither side finding their rhythm. Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo made 10 changes to his side, with Matt Doherty the only player to start Sunday’s draw at Crystal Palace. It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game when Argentine winger Boye cut inside from the byline and saw his stinging drive blocked by John Ruddy. Patrick Cutrone, who has yet to score for Wolves since his summer move from AC Milan, then drew a smart stop from Joao Virginia. Wolves’ pressure eventually told shortly before the half hour, but it was a nightmare moment for Royals goalkeeper Virginia. Portuguese debutant Bruno Jordao fired in a tame effort from 30 yards that Virginia, on a season-long loan from Everton, fumbled into his own net. Sadly for Jordao, he picked up an injury before half time and had to be replaced by 18-year-old Taylor Perry. Wolves could have doubled their lead midway through the second half when Doherty headed a corner back across goal towards Cutrone, but the Italian failed to get a touch on the ball. Wolves then had Ryan Bennett to thank for preserving their lead when the defender cleared Yakou Meite’s effort off the line. The Premier League side began to defend deeper and deeper as the game progressed, seemingly content to hold on to the 1-0 victory. The result was a frantic finale as Reading increased the pressure on the Wanderers goal. George Puscas came close to a dramatic leveller in the second minute of stoppage-time but Ruddy was quick off his line to block the effort. That reprieve would not last long however, as Boye rose highest in the six yard box to send the game straight to penalties, only for Wolves to have the last laugh and edge through to the last 16 on spot-kicks.
