MK Dons 0-2 Liverpool

It was the hosts that created the games first meaningful opportunity, but after Sam Nombe took advantage of some hesitant Liverpool defending, Conor McGrandles could not apply the finish.

At the other end Liverpool spurned an even better chance when debutant Harvey Elliott hit the underside of the crossbar from just five yards out after some brilliant set up play from James Milner.

The roles were reversed just a few minutes later when Elliott’s wonderfully floated cross landed on the head of Milner, but he could not find the target from a tight angle.

The Liverpool skipper had no such trouble with his next effort, however, as his strike from the corner of the box on 41 minutes was too hot for Dons goalkeeper Stuart Moore to handle, as he spilled the ball into the net – an error that gifted Liverpool the lead.

After the break and Liverpool continued to dominate, although they were given a real scare when Dons forward Jordan Bowery hit the outside of the post.

MK were made to rue that miss, however, as minutes later Liverpool doubled their lead thanks to a first senior goal from full-back Ki-Jana Hoever, who bulleted home a header from a Milner cross.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain then came close with a long-range effort that was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Moore, but credit to MK Dons, as they then created a flurry of late chances.

First of all Bowery should have scored with a close-range header, but he was denied by a brilliant save from Liverpool’s debutant goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Bowery also came close with a shot from the edge of the box, while defender George Williams had a strike cleared off the line by Dejan Lovren.

It was the impressive Elliott that almost had the last laugh for Liverpool though, as he hit the post for a second time in stoppage time, as he came close to rounding off an assured performance.Carabao Cup draw for the fourth round:
