Graham Potter made 11 changes to his Brighton side which started the goalless draw with Newcastle.
Aston Villa boss Dean Smith made nine changes for Aston Villa from the 3-2 defeat at Arsenal as summer signings Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa were handed a chance to shine.
Villa made the early running against a youthful-looking Seagulls’ side in the opening exchanges.
However, just as the hosts appeared to be getting to grips with their visitors, Villa took the lead in the 22nd minute.
Conor Hourihane got a sight of goal and, while his drive was tipped away by David Button, the ball rolled into the path of Jota who drilled it into the net.
Villa added a second 11 minutes later when Keinan Davis got to the byline and pulled the ball back into the path of Hourihane and he applied the finishing touch with his left-foot.
Brighton were inches away from equalising a minute before half-time when Aaron Connolly created an opening for himself down the left of the area, but watched his angled drive rebound off the crossbar with Jed Steer beaten.
Villa were close to scoring a killer third on 50 minutes when John McGinn surged from midfield and teed up Trezeguet who watched as Button tipped his goalbound strike over the top.
It was game-on just after the hour mark when Brighton pulled a goal back as Peter Gwargis whipped a corner into the box and Haydon Roberts was on hand to guide his header past Steer.
But, any chance of a fight-back was snuffed out on 77 minutes when substitute Jack Grealish fired in from the centre of the box after Brighton failed to clear their lines.
